Our group which is called 1 Team 1 Voice , first began in February 2003. We started the group because we wanted all the professionals who are involved in our lives, to listen to us and understand what it is like to be 'looked after'. We wanted them to think about things from our point of view. There are 12 young people aged 12-18 in the group at any one time. Young People change as they as move on to pastures new or decide they no longer want to take part. All young people who attend the group are and have been 'looked after'.
Because of the work we have completed, we feel we have managed with support to make many positive changes for Looked After children within St Helens.
We meet up at least once a month, in different places. The meetings are after school or training, everyone tends to make their own way there.
Meeting up gives us a chance to; catch up, do some work, have some tea and more importantly have lots of fun.
These are some of the things we have taken part in since the group first began;
- Interviewing staff
- Training staff
- Giving presentations to different professionals
- Attending local and national conferences
- Attending corporate parenting meetings with senior managers and councillors.
- Attending staff team meetings
- Designing, producing and editing two DVD's for looked after children
- Producing a newsletter
- Consultation and information leaflets for looked after young people
- Helping professionals improve the way they work with looked after young people.
We also;
- Receive feedback on work we have completed
- Make sure our views are listened to and passed on, so that things are changed for the better!
- Take part in lots of social activities
The group we feel has been very successful. This is also shown in the awards we have been nominated for.
Whatever we do, all the group is involved and has a say!!!!!!!
